Mathias Svold of the Danish School of Journalism in Aarhus, Denmark has been named the 72nd College Photographer of the Year with the Gold award from the competition judged at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Mateusz Baj of the London College of Communication in London, England was named the Runner-up College Photographer of the Year with a Silver award in the Portfolio category.
The portfolios of Gabriel Scarlett of Western Kentucky University and Chris Donovan of Loyalist College in Ontario, Canada were recognized with Awards of Excellence.
The winners were selected from the entries of 11,347 still photographs, 500 picture stories and 119 portfolios entered by 494 student photographers from 123 colleges and universities in 22 countries.
The top winners also were winners in category awards. Svold’s work won a Silver award in the Interpretive Project category and Baj’s entry in International Picture Story won a Bronze award.

Judging of the Multimedia Division of the College Photographer of the Year competition begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10 and continues through Sunday, Nov. 12. Winners for that division will be announced November 12 at the conclusion of the judging.
