ATHENS, GA (December 2, 2015) – Alex Garcia and Luanne Dietz have been elected to the board of directors for the National Press Photographers Association during the association's annual election, held during the month of November. They will be sworn-in during NPPA’s January 2015 annual boad meeting at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. They have been elected to serve a three-year term.
“It was an extremely close race in a year we saw a significant increase in voter turnout,” said national secretary Michael P. King, who runs the elections process each year. “The top three candidates were neck-and-neck. Alex and Luanne were separated by just two votes. Ross Taylor, our first runner-up, trailed Luanne by only one vote."
Runners-up in the election for board seats were (in order) Taylor, Scott Mc Kiernan, Anne Herbst, Jeremy Lock, Paul Martin Lester, and Greg Kendall-Ball. They may be called upon, in that order, to fill vacancies on the board in the year ahead, should any openings arise.
Garcia, who has previously served as a presidential appointee to the board, is an independent photojournalist formerly with The Chicago Tribune. He was the author of "Assignment Chicago,” a blog that explained, encouraged, and defended the work of photojournalists. He was part of the team that produced NPPA’s “The Value of Photojournalism” research and advocacy project.
Dietz is a senior director and producer at CNN’s Courageous in New York, after previously working as a photo editor and multimedia producer at the San Francisco Chronicle. She is a two-time Emmy Award winner, and the director of Cause Beautiful, a non-profit aiming to use photography as a catalyst for social change.
In addition to the board of directors election, members in all of NPPA’s new regions elected their Regional Chairs:
In the New England Region: Annalisa Russell Smith was elected Regional Chair for a term of three years.
In the New York/International Region: Heather Ainsworth was elected Regional Chair for a term of three years.
In the Mid-Atlantic Region: Kyle Grantham was elected Regional Chair for a term of three years.
In the Southeast Region: Andrew Stanfill was elected Regional Chair for a term of two years.
In the South Region: Kevin M. Cox was elected Regional Chair for a term of two years.
In the Midwest Region: Jake May was elected Regional Chair for a term of two years.
In the Central Region: Regina McCombs was elected Regional Chair for a term of one year.
In the Northwest Region: Eric Sander was elected Regional Chair for a term of one year.

In the coming weeks these newly elected regional chairs will be tasked with appointing their associate chairs as well as local grassroots leaders in geographic areas with high membership concentrations. They will officially take office on January 1. This new leadership structure is aimed at organizing local activities and mobilizing NPPA’s membership.
