The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) commends the appointment of Shira Perlmutter as the new Register of Copyrights and director of the U.S. Copyright Office by the Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden.
NPPA looks forward to working with her to advance the copyright needs, concerns and rights of visual journalists and all independent creators moving forward into the Copyright Office’s 150th anniversary year.
NPPA is also extremely grateful to Maria Strong, who has ably served as acting Register since January 2020, and look forward to continuing our working relationship with her as she returns to her position as Associate Register of Copyrights for Policy and International Affairs.
Ms. Perlmutter, who formerly worked as the Chief Policy Officer and Director for International Affairs at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) will assume the role of Register in late October.
“On behalf of the NPPA and our members, we congratulate Shira Perlmutter on her appointment as the next Register of Copyrights, thank the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, for selecting her and also thank Maria Strong for her leadership during these very challenging times,” said NPPA Executive Director Akili-Casundria Ramsess.
