NSC Faculty member Barbara Davidson named POYi Newspaper Photographer of the Year

COLUMBIA, MO (February 11, 2014) – Barbara Davidson, a staff photojournalist for the Los Angeles Times, achieved premier honors as the 2013 Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the 71st annual Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition.

Davidson’s award-winning portfolio was chosen during the first five-day session of the three week judging period.

In honoring Davidson’s portfolio, the judges noted a strong balance of powerful aesthetic with solid journalistic content that included stunning images from her story “A Healing Bond,” about a young girl from Afghanistan coming to the United States for medical treatment. Another pictures story that the judges noted in Davidson’s portfolio was titled “LA’s Shooting Season,” which focused on the trauma team at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Davidson will be leading two workshops at the 33rd Northern Short Course March 13-15, 2014 in Warwick, RI.

Commitment, empathy, perseverance, compassion, curiosity and a compulsion for story-telling — these are just some of the qualities a photographer has to have to produce a compelling and impactful long-form photo essay. This workshop is aimed at photographers who already have long-form projects in motion and are looking for ways to take their story to the next level. Barbara Davidson will lead group-driven editing sessions and critiques to get into the nuts and bolts of how to craft and articulate your story through core concepts such as understanding and using your story’s inherent narrative structure, how to develop and shape a story arc and how to identify where to go with your story from here. Barbara will share some of the challenges of her own award-winning projects and will discuss crucial issues concerning the ethics, responsibility and emotional costs and rewards of purposeful, political and socially responsible long-form photojournalism.

Portfolio submission/admission requirement:  10-15 photographs from a long-form photo essay you are currently working on or have plans to continue working on including a brief summary of the project.  Davidson will select no more than 8 participants to participate in this hands-on workshop. Deadline for submissions to be considered is February 28, 2014.   You must be registered for the NSC to attend this workshop. Submissions souls be sent via Dropbox or Copy to northernshortcourse@gmail.com
