The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) is requesting applications for the volunteer position of Chair of the Advanced Storytelling Workshop (ASW). It is the intent of the NPPA to choose a Chair by September 1, 2019, in preparation to successfully organize and lead the March 29 to April 3, 2020 ASW in San Marcos, Texas.
ASW is one of NPPA’s flagship annual workshops. It is a continuation of the NPPA’s News Video Workshop, enabling visual storytellers to take their stories to the next level. Designed for experienced television and newspaper photojournalists, reporters and video journalists, it is a week-long educational experience that enhances storytelling abilities and improves career trajectories.
The program is a mix of classroom instruction and opportunities for participants to produce deadline-driven stories to showcase what they’ve learned. There are regular assignment meetings for story idea evaluation and refinement. Stories are produced under real-world deadlines. Emphasis is placed on developing a clear story focus before production begins. Finished stories are critiqued by faculty members that include some of the best visual journalists in the industry.
Under this model, the workshop incorporates the following strategies and values:
• Everyone participates; every voice matters;
• Shooting and editing take place under real-world deadlines;
• Low student-to-faculty ratio;
• In-depth, frequent critiques and guidance;
• Creativity on deadline;
• A diverse and inclusive set of faculty;
• Anyone can film pretty video and eye-candy. ASW’s mission is to help students transcend those features into memorable stories.

They will also provide a valuable contribution to current and future generations of visual journalists. This position is incredibly important for shaping and guiding the visual journalism industry.

The successful applicant will articulate how to ensure the workshop is inspirational and educational for all students. The successful applicant will also describe how to operate a self-sustaining workshop, to ensure the viability of future cohorts.
