Oct. 6, 2021 - The National Press Photographer's general counsel, Mickey Osterreicher, was contacted by a student about the seizure of a camera from a McKinney High School (McKinney, Texas) student journalist while covering a school protest. Read the letter that was sent to the district superintendent.
NPPA Advocacy works for our members in support of the First Amendment rights. In this case, it was noted that the "alleged seizure/confiscation of the camera is a violation of the Privacy Protection Act of 1980 which was enacted to protect the work product of journalists resulting from a 1978 case involving the search of a student newspaper at Stanford University (see: Zurcher v. Stanford Daily, 436 U.S. 547)."
If any NPPA member experiences a violation of their First Amendment rights, we want to hear from you. Contact Mickey Osterreicher at [email protected].
