Photojournalist Mark Ovaska's essay "Muck City" has appeared in The New York Times Sunday Review "Exposures" section. Ovaska's essay was supported by one of NPPA's Short Grants.

His documentary story focuses on a region in the northern Everglades where football plays a major role, and where five players in Sunday's Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers came from Muck City, a name that comes from the dark and silty soil in the agricultural area.

"It's difficult for me to imagine this story's development without the support of NPPA," Ovaska wrote to NPPA's leaders, "which came through at a critical time in my work."
