Paul Hansen Wins POYi Newspaper Photographer Of The Year
COLUMBIA, MO (February 10, 2013) – Photographer Paul Hansen from the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter achieved premier honors as the 2012 Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the 70th annual Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition on Saturday in Columbia.
Hansen also won the POYi title in 2010.
Hansen’s award-winning portfolio was chosen during the first five-day session of the three-week judging period. In honoring Hansen’s portfolio, the judges noted a strong balance of powerful aesthetic with solid journalistic content that included stunning news images from the Gaza conflict and an extended project on the lives of those affected by the 2011 Norway massacre.
Two newspaper photojournalists from the United States also received portfolio honors in the Newspaper Photographer of the Year premier category. Damon Winter of The New York Times and Dave Weatherwax of The Herald in Jasper, IN, were recognized with 2nd and 3rd place awards.
The judges for this weeks categories were Emilio Morenatti of the Associated Press; photojournalist Bill Luster; San Francisco Chronicle photography director Judy Walgren; and photojournalist Walt Stricklin.
The Newspaper Photographer of the Year award is one of two portfolio honors bestowed by POYi each year. The Freelance / Agency Photographer of the Year category will be judged on Sunday, February 17.
Winning photographs in all categories judged during the first session are posted on the POYi Web site at www.poyi.org. Winners’ names or affiliations will become official after the conclusion of judging on February 27.
POYi is a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (www.rjionline.org) at the Missouri School of Journalism.
