June 14, 2021 - The National Press Photographers Foundation is pleased to announce the 2021 Bob Lynn Grant recipients.
Mary Calvert, for her project “Uranium Contamination on the Navajo Nation.”
“Funding from the 2021 Bob Lynn Grant will allow me to bring awareness to this under-reported story. Sadly, this issue is here to stay while Covid comes and goes. The devastating impact of uranium contamination will continue to afflict the Navajo people for generations,” Calvert wrote.
“Work has begun on this project. I will continue to document the relationship between uranium exposure and its effects on the environment and people of all ages. It is important to show the hardships Navajo people endure in their vexing pursuit of vital medical care to treat illnesses associated with prolonged uranium exposure,” she wrote.
“Bob Lynn is a fantastic editor and ran one of the best photo staffs at one of the best newspapers for photography in our business,” Calvert wrote.
Nathan Posner is a student at Georgetown University. He won for his project “Behind the Ballot- An intimate portrait of those who drive Georgia's election process.”
Posner will begin work this summer and through the 2022 election. “I am planning to take the fall 2022 semester off so I can cover events leading up to election day. The grant allows me to do the project, which will require travel expenses for long drives around Georgia. I am especially looking forward to the advice and mentoring offered by the grant’s founder, Bob Lynn,” Posner wrote.
