Matt Rainey is a contract photographer based in Clinton Twp., NJ. Clients include American Express, Catholic Health East, CURE, Fidelity, NJ Monthly Magazine, The New York Times, Rutgers University-Mason Gross School of the Arts, RWJBarnabas Health, Rodale Inc., Saint Peter's University Hospital, USGA.
Rainey is the recipient of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, and a member of the team awarded the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting. He is also the recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Domestic Photojournalism and the Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers, administered by the Neiman Foundation at Harvard University. He is the recipient of the Sigma Delta Chi Gold Medal administered by the Society of Professional Journalists. Among his other honors, Rainey has twice been named NJ Press Photographer of the Year and has been awarded the NJ Understanding Award in Photojournalism four times. Matt has been named the runner up to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism, the DART Award, and the Canon Photo Essayist Award. He holds Best in Show honors in both, The National Headliners Competition and the International Society of News Design, as well as the Gold Medal.
Matt worked on staff for The Star-Ledger for 15 years, covering stories including the earthquake which struck Haiti, the tsunami which struck SouthEast Asia, Hurrican Katrina, The Virginina Tech shootings, conflict in the Middle East and thousands of stories of the lives of New Jersey residents. Matt served as an adjunct professor of photojournalism at Kean University for 11 years and taught courses at Rutgers University. He is Past President and Life Member of the NJ Press Photographers Association, a member of the NPPA, ASMP and NYPPA. Matt sits on the 2018 Advisory Board for the [email protected] Rutgers Certificate Program - Rutgers Center for Innovation Education.
Matt is a graduate of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He is married and the father of three. He also has two big dogs, Timber and Rocket.
