At approximately 4 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 a call from the Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky., reported to inform the delicate condition John "Dan" Scroggins Sr., 86. Within minutes and hours, Dan's six children drove from all parts of Kentucky to see Dan, who carried an aging heart. Dan prayed that he would die easily and that he wouldn't die alone. The family honored his request, and from that morning until Dan died at 11:37 p.m. that night, one of the six children or nine grandchildren remained at his side, holding his hand. Carol Krampe, 65, from Owensboro, Ky., is the oldest of the children. Throughout the day, Carol replaced the cool washcloth on her father's forehead to make him more comfortable. "It's OK, Papa," Carol whispered in his ear. "Go see Memaw. We are all here. It is OK to go." "
