Tom Laffay is a visual journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Charleston, South Carolina who's main interests are food production, development and immigration in the Southeastern US and throughout Latin America. From 2011 until mid 2013 he lived and worked in Northwestern Nicaragua where he documented populations of sugarcane workers being decimated by an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin (CKDu). His short documentary film on the subject, SOLO LA CAÑA won the 2013 Charleston International Film Festival's Jury Pick for Best Doc. Tom is fluent in Spanish and aims to make connections and increase understanding among the diverse peoples of the Americas.
If he doesn't have his camera in hand, Tom is probably surfing small waves on a longboard or in his wood shed working on a project.
